Sarner Porphyry
Sarner Porphyry from the “Vormeswald” quarry is specially characterised by its bright red to reddish colour and its homogeneous structure.
This resilient natural stone is very well suited for large-surface interior and exterior applications and is employed by architects across Europe thanks to its warm and pleasant appearance. It is used especially for façades, floors, baths, staircases, kitchen tops, window sills and stone fountains.
From a geological point of view, this stone is part of the Bozner quartz porphyry group which is spread across South Tyrol and the Trentino and is around 280 million years old.
Quarry
Porphyry has been mined from the “Vormeswald” quarry since the mid-80s. We acquired the mining rights for this quarry in 2017. We now mine porphyry for around 10 months in the year, further processing it into five different product groups or selling it directly. The quarry itself is located at a height of approx. 1300 – 1500 m south-west of the Bundschen part of the Sarentino Valley.
The bright reddish porphyry is mined step-by-step from above to below on a surface of approx. 7 hectares, using the most advanced mining machinery: The most modern drilling technology, a hydraulic splitting cylinder and a mobile wire saw enable porphyry blocks of the highest quality to be mined in the most efficient manner.
Riprap stones
Sarner Porphyry is very well suited to use as riprap stones and cyclopean blocks.
Bricks
Small fragments generated during the mining of blocks are used for brick manufacture.
Block products
In the quarry, our employees use the latest technology to quarry porphyry blocks of the highest quality.
Rough slabs
Together with our partners, we are able to cut our rough blocks into rough slabs of varying thickness.
Floor slabs
Another Sarner Porphyry product that has achieved great popularity in the market are ground strips for interior and exterior pedestrian and vehicular surfaces.
Products
We currently offer our Sarner Porphyry in five product forms: Riprap stones, bricks, blocks, rough slabs and floor slabs.

Riprap stones
Thanks to its frost resistance, high weather resistance and resistance to mechanical stress, Sarner Porphyry is very well suited for use as riprap stone and cyclopean blocks. For this reason, throughout South Tyrol, we are an expert partner for the Safety and Civil Protection Agency in relation to water control structures.
Our riprap stones are certified in accordance with the EN 13383 standard. A distinctive feature of the quarry is the high availability of riprap stones above 2 m³ in size.
Bricks
Small fragments generated during the mining of blocks are used for brick manufacture.
Natural stone walls made from Sarner Porphyry create a pleasant atmosphere thanks to the warm colour of the stone. For this reason these bricks are used especially in garden design.
Block products
In the quarry, our employees use the latest technology to quarry porphyry blocks of the highest quality.
The use of mobile wire saws allows blocks of up to 30 t to be mined in a resource-efficient way.
Rough slabs
Together with our partners, we are able to cut our rough blocks into rough slabs of varying thickness. In keeping with the wishes of our customers, we can offer various surface treatments for the Sarner Porphyry. Innovative surface treatment ideas can be implemented, alongside the traditional surface treatments such as flame or sand-blasting.
Floor slabs
Another Sarner Porphyry product that has achieved great popularity in the market are ground strips for interior and exterior pedestrian and vehicular surfaces. Depending on the surface treatment, a wide variety of the colours in the porphyry can be shown to best advantage.
